Overbrook City Park Planters Get a Colorful Facelift—and a Cultural Boost

9/2/2025

Overbrook City Park just received a vibrant makeover that’s turning heads and warming hearts. Thanks to the ongoing dedication of Overbrook PRIDE, Inc., the park’s eight large planters have been lovingly maintained since their installation in 2006.

These planters have a story to tell. Originally lining Topeka Boulevard in the 1960s, they were purchased at auction by local citizen Dorthy Chikly, who generously donated them to the city. Over the years, they’ve been painted by local groups and high school students, each generation adding its own creative touch.

Every spring, Overbrook PRIDE fills the planters with fresh flowers, bringing seasonal beauty and a sense of renewal to the heart of our town. But this year, the planters received more than just blooms—they were transformed into stunning pieces of art, each featuring a hand-painted floral design that celebrates both creativity and community.

Local artist Tammy Metzger poured her heart into the project, dedicating over 84 hours of her time and personal resources to bring the planters to life. Each one now showcases a unique floral design, thoughtfully created and painted by Tammy herself.

While working on the planters, Tammy shared that she met more people—both locals and visitors—than ever before. She even connected with individuals from surrounding communities who come to Overbrook City Lake to walk and enjoy the scenery. Teenagers stopped by to chat about her art, showing how creativity can spark meaningful conversations across generations.

Her time spent painting became more than just an artistic endeavor—it became a way to bring people together. The project fostered connection, encouraged dialogue, and strengthened the sense of community not just in Overbrook, but throughout the region.

Tammy’s contribution has done more than beautify the park—it’s added a layer of culture and character to our small town, making Overbrook a must-see destination for anyone traveling through Osage County. The planters now stand as a testament to community spirit, artistic expression, and the power of one person’s dedication to make a lasting difference.

Whether you're a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, be sure to swing by Overbrook City Park and experience this colorful celebration of local pride, history, and creativity.
