Library

How long does it take to get a library card?

Our librarian will be able to supply you with a new library card the same day you apply.

Are electronic books available?

Electronic books are available. Contact Library for more information.

Does the Library have "story time" for younger children?

We do offer "story time" for younger children!  Give us a call if the current schedule is not posted.

City Hall

What hours is City Hall open?

City Hall is open Monday-Friday from 8am - 5pm. Closed 12:30-1:30 for lunch. 

Please note our updated hours at City Hall- we will open at 8AM and close at 5PM. Lunch will remain from 12:30PM to 1:30PM. I will be available outside those hours via call or text to 785-224-5157. Feel free to use our dropbox or our online payment option at www.overbrookks.com

City Hall has a dropbox for payments to the right of our front door. We also accept payments through our website. There is no additional fee for paying with your credit or debit card or by electronic check. If you have questions, please call 665-7328. Thank you! Jim Koger Overbrook City Clerk

Application Process

I am interested in applying for a job with the City of Overbrook, Kansas, what do I do?

You will need to fill out an application if available.  Please ensure you meet the qualifications for the position you wish to be considered for.  If you would like to include a resume, simply attach it to the completed application. You may mail or drop off the application at City Hall.  Interviews will be scheduled accordingly.

Does the City of Overbrook, Kansas hire part time employees?

Building Permits & Inspections

What is the process for getting a building permit?

Take a moment to read all required information provided. Then print and fill out the building permit application form and return to city hall.  Should you have any additional questions, please feel free to give us a call or send us an email.  We will be happy to help you.

Sanitation & Recycling

When are the garbage collection days for my street?

Please refer to the monthly schedule. Remember, observed holidays will alter the normal routine.

Water Utilities

How could I have used this much water?

You may not have - the numbers on your meter may have been transposed or hard to read. You could possibly have a leaky toilet or faucet that's difficult to detect. Just call the office and we'll work with you to solve the problem.

My bill is past due can I get an extension?

Please contact our office and a one-time extension will be extended to you for extenuating circumstances.

What do I do if I am experiencing low pressure?

Check your meter and the surrounding area for possible leaks. Next, call our office and report low pressure for your area.

Why do I have a previous balance when I know I sent in my payment?

We may have received it after the due date or we may not have received it at all. Call our office and we will help you solve the problem.

Why is my water discolored?

A repair could have been completed recently allowing air to enter the line, causing the milky look.

Public Works

How can I get a pothole fixed near my house?

What happens when pavement falls into a really deep hole?

Call City Hall at (785) 665-7328. We will put in a work order and make sure it's not a result of a water line break.

Do I need a permit to build a fence or deck on my property?

You may need a permit for a fence depending on the length. On the deck, if the footprint of the house is not changing and no additional structures are being added, no permit will be required. Call City Hall at (785) 665-7328 to see if you need one for your project.

I'm building a portable shed on runners or a pallet, that will not be permanent structure. Do I need a permit?

No, a permit is not required - But we do ask that you respect code compliance, keep it out of your front or side yard and comply with established setbacks.

I am building a small tool/garden shed in the back yard, do I need a permit?

If it is a permanent structure - Yes.

Will I need a permit to put in a sidewalk or concrete slab?

Possibly - We will need to see where you plan to place the sidewalk or slab.

If putting in a driveway, is there anything I should know?

If you pay for it, the City will help you put in a culvert. It can be added to your Utility Bill.

How do I report a power outage?

You can call Evergy at (800) 544-4857 to report an outage.

How do I report a street light that is out?

You can visit https://www.evergy.com/street-light-outage to report a street light that has gone out.

Who is responsible for snow removal?

The City will handle the streets, with the main thouroughfare being the priority. The sidewalks are the responsibility of the home owners or business owners.

There are some traffic signs I can't read very well. Can I get them replaced?

If you notice a faded, damaged, or missing street sign, call City Hall at (785) 665-7328.

Can we close our street for a block party?

Yes - You must make your request to the City Council.

Can I get a street light installed in my neighborhood?

Yes - You must make your request to the City Council. If approved the City Council will send a formal request to Evergy.

When should I set my Waste and Recycling out?

Trash collection day is on Friday. Recycling is every other monday.

Is there anything I should know about trash collection?

Trash is expected to be on the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the day of pickup except on certain holidays(listed below.) Trash should be stored in no larger than a 33 gallon trash container, weighing no more than 40 pounds. Yard trimmings must be no more than 3 feet in length and bundled. Do not set out hazardous materials. You must provide your own Solid Waste Container. The City provides the recycle bin.

Is there a safe way to dispose of unused medications in Overbrook?

Yes! Your unused and out of date medications may be disposed of properly at Medsafe located at Overbrook City Hall. Leave medications in original containers when possible. Liquid containers must be 4oz or less and be placed in a plastic baggy. No sharps containers, needles, syringes, batteries, aerosol spray cans, medical devices, chemicals, or other hazardous materials may be placed in Medsafe. Medsafe is a safe way to collect and properly destroy unused medication.
